Water for Food: Enhancing Food Security in the Developing World Through Improved Agricultural Water Management I Posters

Session Description:
Food security is a challenging issue emerging in socioeconomic development of human society. Although significant progress has been made in past few decades, there are still prevalent hunger and malnutrition in developing world. Improved agricultural water management could serve as a key element in solutions to address the challenge. In Sub-Saharan Africa, crop production is predominantly rainfed and is thus vulnerable to precipitation variability. Expanding irrigation is widely perceived as an important means to boost agricultural production in the region. In South Asia, intensive irrigation has acted as a pillar to support green revolution in South Asian countries, but also created concerns about sustainability of water resources and the irrigated agriculture, which need to be addressed through improved management practices. This session is designed to discuss recent research on agricultural water management, which generates new insight to inform national or regional food policy making in developing countries.
