EP13C:
From the Eastern Tibetan Plateau to the Andaman Sea: The Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin River Source to Sink System Posters

Session ID#: 52064
Session Description:
The Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin River dispersal systems significantly impact Southeast Asiaâs landscape and seascape; and their sedimentary deposits record a complex interplay of climatic and tectonic drivers. Their combined sediment load ranks third among rivers, and may represent the second largest point source of organic carbon to the ocean. However, the source and fate of river-derived sediment, nutrients, and carbon over modern and geologic time scales are still unknown for this area. Understanding their modern and paleoenvironmental functions and overarching geologic and climatic controls is crucial to prepare for environmental change in this heavily populated region. Recent studies have provided a wealth of knowledge spanning the continuum of the source â to â sink system encompassing these rivers. This session provides an opportunity to present recent results and integrate them into a comprehensive understanding of source-to-sink systems within Southeast Asia, as exemplified by the Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin Rivers.
