Session Description:
Inland and coastal ecosystems are often impaired by multiple stressors, which complicates both problem description and restoration. Better understanding ecosystem responses to human disturbances and management is an increasingly important theme of hydrologic studies. Addressing such complex and widespread issues requires multidisciplinary approaches and consideration of ecosystem spatial and temporal characteristics. This session will develop an integrated understanding of how and why ecosystems have responded differently to human disturbances and management, including a synthesis of analysis tools for quantifying ecosystem improvement and establishing linkage to management efforts. The session welcomes large-scale studies (e.g., Chesapeake Bay, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, Yangtze River, Baltic Sea) and small-scale studies that have broader implications. The session will feature ecosystem-specific presentations and a collective discussion on cross-system comparison. Presentations are encouraged to discuss a common set of issues, including primary impairments, management actions, watershed characteristics, restoration progress, and factors responsible for lack of progress.
