Session Description:
In energy-limited subsurface environments, microorganisms are faced with the conundrum of maintaining the ability to consume whatever substrates are available versus streamlining their metabolic potential to reduce genetic machinery costs. This session seeks abstracts addressing that balance and investigating the activity (or lack thereof) of deep subsurface organisms. We invite contributions regarding active metabolisms and metabolic potential, bioenergetics, enzyme specificity, electroactivity, microbial fitness and evolution, radiolysis, and connections between metabolism and system geochemistry. What survival strategies do microbes employ, how do these strategies vary with geochemistry, and how much plasticity do subsurface microbial communities possess? As molecular and chemical techniques advance, we are on the verge of linking individual microorganisms to the substrates they consume. Accomplishing this next, important step will elucidate how life persists at its energetic limits.
