B53K:
Understanding the Biogeochemistry of Nitrogen Inputs and Outputs from Molecular to Global Scales II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 52343
Session Description:
Nitrogen (N) is abundant in the atmosphere as N2 gas but must undergo chemical changes that yield “fixed” N forms to be bioavailable. Fixed N can also be converted back to N2. Global N cycling has undergone drastic alterations over time, with implications for the biosphere’s size, evolution, and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and other elements. Natural processes of N input (e.g. biological nitrogen fixation, lightning) and output (e.g. denitrification, anammox) have controlled the amount of bioavailable N until the recent Anthropocene. However, uncertainties remain on the contributions, controls, mechanisms, and evolution of N flows. This session unites researchers employing cross-disciplinary tools to address how N enters, is transformed, and exits the biosphere in modern and ancient systems over multiple size scales. We invite submissions on: controls on N inputs/outputs; N budgets; microbial physiology, biochemistry; ancient geochemical change inferred from protein/metabolism evolution; stable isotopes; geochemistry/OMICs-based measurement and model studies.
