PA44B:
Using Earth Observations for Resource Management in the Western United States: The Nexus of Water and Food Security
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 52567
Session Description:
From groundwater to snow pack to soil conditions, satellites routinely measure an increasing array of variables important for agricultural production in the western United States. These observations and their derived products can potentially improve decision-making around water resource management impacting food security. In addition to water supply, satellite observations are starting to be used to monitor water quality. This session seeks presentations that demonstrate how Earth observations are being applied to advance our ability to manage and respond to water resource challenges related to farming (i.e. crops, livestock, aquaculture/seafood) that are unique to the western U.S. Submissions could include the use of Earth observations for responding to drought in the near term and planning and adapting for longer term water availability challenges relative to agricultural applications. We also welcome discussion of the practical challenges faced by applied science projects and the evaluation of Earth observations utilized within a decision framework.
