Session Description:
Water resources management typically involves tradeoffs among multiple objectives including water supply, flood control, hydropower generation, environmental flows, recreation and fisheries. Hydroeconomic models have contributed to better represent water and environmental systems and to assess potential economic tradeoffs. Yet when water management decisions are made in a highly uncertain environment, economic efficiency is not the only nor the most important criterion. Hence the need to include additional criteria such as system supply and flood control reliability, equity, becomes more pressing. However, many times these criteria are poorly defined and therefore disregarded from the analysis. This session invites research contributions, aimed to advance representation of alternative performance criteria in managing water and environmental systems. Case studies involving stakeholders, regulators and various economic sectors will provide a cross section suitable for vanguard hydro-economic modeling tools.
