S23B:
The 15 November 2017 Pohang Earthquake Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 53431
Session Description:
It has been suggested that the 2017 Mw 5.4 Pohang earthquake, the most damaging earthquake in South Korea during the instrumental earthquake observation period, was induced by fluid injection from an enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). If so, the magnitude of the 2017 Pohang earthquake is the largest among the induced earthquakes in EGS and far greater than any previous empirical relationships predict. We invite contributions that explore the extraordinary case of the 2017 Pohang earthquake in South Korea including, but not limited to, the observations of the earthquake sequence, earthquake source mechanism, fault structure, geodetic and geological observation, geomechanical modeling, earthquake slip distribution and rupture directivity, and hazard assessment and mitigation. We also welcome contributions from a broad range of disciplines in regards to the induced event and aim to provide a venue for the discussion of this unusual earthquake.
