Air–Sea Interaction from Tropics to Extratropics: Ocean Mesoscales, Teleconnections, and Climate Predictions Posters

Session Description:
Oceans play an important role in climate variations through air-sea interactions not only in the tropics but also in the extra-tropics. Influence of tropical air-sea interactions can extend to the mid and high latitudes through teleconnections. However, these tropical-extratropical teleconnections are not always well captured in global climate models, causing model biases and low predictability in seasonal to interannual climate variations in the extra-tropics. In addition, coherent space-time variability exists between the ocean and the atmosphere on oceanic mesoscale and frontal scales (e.g., 1-1000 km) in both the tropics and extra-tropics. The ocean forced variability of surface turbulent heat fluxes mediated at the mesoscales might be important to our understanding of larger scales air-sea interactions. This session invites contributions on all aspects of air-sea interaction studies from oceanic mesoscales to those that relate to global teleconnections, and their impacts on large-scale atmosphere, ocean, biogeochemistry, and climate predictions.
