Session ID#: 56605

Session Description:
Soils play host to a critical range of biogeochemical processes having direct impact on carbon and other nutrient cycles. Net fluxes from these cycles result from a balance between microbial activity and inherent soil properties mediated by mineral components and respond to both spatial heterogeneity within soils and environmental perturbations. This session provides a forum for discussing new techniques and advances leading to a better conceptual understanding of the roles of microbes and minerals in driving the rate of transformation, uptake, and loss of chemical elements from soil ecosystems. Advances in spatially-resolved and imaging techniques, models focused at multiple scales, harnessing of a wide array of ‘omics’ capabilities, use of synthetic soils or soil replacements, advanced mass spectrometry approaches, leveraging of stable isotope tracers, and other topics are strongly encouraged as are scientific studies that provide new insights to this vital, yet challenging to study, system.
