Session Description:
Laboratory earthquake-analog experiments provide a unique opportunity to study complex, (a)seismic processes in isolation and under controlled conditions. In recent years, significant improvement in instrumentation has helped advance our understanding of earthquake physics both at very small scales and high slip velocities; however appropriate scaling of lab-results remains challenging. This session integrates experimental observations along with field, seismological and numerical studies. We invite contributions from: 1) Experimental studies of slow to fast fracture and frictional processes in rocks, granular and analog materials. 2) Seismological studies on the earthquake energy budget and partitioning between fracture, friction and seismic radiation. 3) Numerical simulations of earthquake processes including nucleation, propagation and triggering. 4) The role of fluids in inducing earthquakes and transient deformation in reservoirs, tectonic and volcanic environments. This session has an interdisciplinary focus with the aim to connect insights from rock mechanics, seismology, tectonics, volcanology, and hydrogeology.
