Biogeochemical Cycling in Estuaries, Coastal Waters, and Their Watersheds: Natural Variability, Response to Land Use and Climate Change, and Management Implications II

Session Description:
Estuaries and coastal waters play a key role in biogeochemical cycling because they link the land with the open ocean via the transformation of river-borne materials. The unique biogeochemistry of these highly productive aquatic environments supports fisheries and other ecosystem services. Changes in land use of coastal watersheds has altered biogeochemical cycling, often with detrimental impacts on downstream ecosystems via eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, and acidification. Management has attempted to reverse these impacts, but often without consideration of climate change, which, through warming, changing streamflow patterns, and sea-level rise, is altering the biogeochemistry in complex ways. This session seeks contributions to biogeochemical research in estuaries, coastal waters and their watersheds, ranging from fundamental process understanding to support of coastal management. We solicit studies across a wide range of observational, modeling, and theoretical approaches. Research on the impacts and management implications of land use and climate change are especially encouraged.
