Physical Oceanography, Geodynamics, and Ecological Environment of the Western Pacific II

Session Description:
The Western Pacific Ocean is unique in terms of physical oceanography, geodynamics, and ecological environments. Previous studies on the Western Pacific are isolated within individual communities. For example, oceanographic studies have typically focused on the upper ocean. Deep and abyssal layers are set apart from upper counterparts. Geodynamics are focused on the initiation and development of subduction system. Given the enormous volume and storage of heat and carbon, the long residence time makes the Pacific important in the studies of global overturning circulations and climate change. The deep circulation plays an important role in connecting subducting system and benthic communities, and transporting chemical constituents. Within different basins with narrow connecting passages, bioconnectivity is restricted and deep-water organisms may evolve to be distinct from their adjacent counterparts. This session provides an opportunity for different research communities to share results of recent physical oceanographic, geodynamics, and ecological studies of the Western Pacific.
