Session Description:
Hydrocarbons escaping from the seafloor can have profound impacts on the marine environment. This session aims to collect examples of hydrocarbon seepage in any form including methane from gas hydrate fields or oil from thermogenic hydrocarbon resource fields, for areas from coastal, nearshore to deep continental slopes, from fast changing geographic regions like the Arctic to continental margins. Recent and ongoing programs in seafloor mapping reveal the vast diversity of (in)active seeps either as bubble streams in the water column or high backscatter intensity from carbonates. Repeat measurements or continuous in-situ observations from ocean observatory networks exhibit the variation and overall dynamics of these systems. We further aim to include the fate of the hydrocarbons as they are consumed by biological processes or get absorbed in the ocean and/or escape into the atmosphere from shallow-water seeps. Potential energy resources and anthropogenic sources like blowouts are included in this multi-disciplinary session.
