Session Description:
Significant large-scale change in ocean biogeochemistry is observed and modeled, and these changes are expected to intensify as climate continues to change. The ocean carbon content is increasing, but air-sea flux variability is significant and poorly constrained. Oxygen is decreasing with complex patterns influenced by both changing circulation and productivity. Substantial variations in primary productivity are observed, but the mechanistic drivers are debated. This session will explore these and other biogeochemical changes in the context of several central questions. How is ocean biogeochemistry changing in the present day? To what degree can ocean models reliably project future changes? What are the mechanisms of change? How can we distinguish natural variability from long-term change? Studies using observations, models and/or theory are welcome. Large-scale patterns of variability and change are the focus, but local or regional studies that inform the large-scale perspective are also welcome.
