Session Description:
This session brings together researchers interested in all aspects of fluid mechanics of the Earth and planets, including oceans, atmospheres and interiors. Energy transfer and mixing result from basic mechanisms underlying the dynamics of geophysical flows, such as waves, vortices, phase transition, turbulence and instabilities. An exchange of knowledge between fundamental and applied fluid mechanics communities will be mutually beneficial to all. In this view, observational, experimental, theoretical and numerical studies of rotating, stratified, convecting and/or conductive fluids of general interest to geophysicists are welcome. Contributions based on recent field campaigns, state of the art GCMs, implementations of closure models and DNS will be well received.
