Nonlinear Statistical, Mathematical, and Computational Physics in Complex System Science: Theoretical Advances and Geophysical Applications I

Session Description:
This session focuses on theoretical and applied studies in nonlinear statistical, mathematical and computational physics approaches to address complex system science problems, with special emphasis on geophysical and broader earth system phenomena where nonlinear processes play a key role. The methodological focus is aimed at deepening the physical understanding and strengthening the ability to model nonlinear geophysical processes and assess their dynamic predictability and uncertainty, while also paving the way for applications to other fields. The session spans research on dynamic coevolution among multiple earth system processes; eliciting regimes, transitions and extremes in complex geophysical phenomena; peering into core problems in fluid and plasma turbulence; unveiling hidden predictability in intricate geophysical complexity. For that purpose, developments range from stochastic-dynamic, information-theoretic and machine learning approaches to far-from-equilibrium statistical mechanics, evolutionary agent-based modelling and exascale computing - from fundamental formulation and algorithmic considerations to operational design and implementation to address real-world problems.
