Recent Progress in Nuclear Test Monitoring Capability I

Session Description:
The 2012 National Research Council report “The CTBT: Technical Issues for the United States” reviewed the state of nuclear test monitoring technologies and analyzed theoretical capabilities, finding that “Seismic [and other] technologies have the potential to improve event detection, location, and identification substantially over the next years to decades.” Advances in understanding containment of radionuclides, atmospheric transport, infrasound, hydroacoustics, satellite remote sensing, and seismic measurement of small, evasive tests rely on development across many geoscience disciplines. Since analysis for the NRC report during 2010, the Departments of Defense, Energy, and State have invested in R&D and improved monitoring capabilities and systems. In parallel, fundamental science supported by NSF, USGS, NOAA and others has enhanced geoscience capabilities while new technology has enabled better observational systems, data processing, and simulation. This session brings together geoscientists to review subsequent scientific progress and policy experts to compare capabilities with policy goals.
