Session Description:
Geophysical fluids and space physics depend on complex interactions between waves, thermodynamics, and turbulence. Subgrid-scale processes are challenging to represent in global modeling systems. Stochastic approaches are increasingly important in weather and climate science for subgrid-scale parameterizations. Forecasting the state of the earth system in the presence of uncertainty is highly important. Stochasticity can be applied across all levels of model complexity, from conceptual toy models to complex Earth-system models. Recent progress has been made in stochastic modeling of precipitation, clouds, gravity waves, ocean eddies, and land-ice and sea-ice processes, as well as in hydromechanics and sub-surface hydrology. However, applications of increasing complexity require new and sophisticated data science tools. This session aims at bringing together the mathematical, statistical, and geophysical communities for applications that range from the earth system to space weather. Scientific results related to stochastic processes in meteorology, oceanography, climate science and space physics will be presented.
