Session Description:
The AGU Centennial celebration offers an important opportunity to reflect on the remarkable vitality of the people who make up the Earth and space science community, as well as identify gaps where more engagement is needed. Diversity of perspectives and interdisciplinarity have always been a hallmark of the geosciences; globalization of the geoscience enterprise has further enriched the field. Research confirms that the scientific process is greatly enhanced when diverse perspectives are engaged: it invigorates problem solving, balances biases, and facilitates specialization. Increasingly, interdisciplinarity is being pursued through collaborations between geoscientists and social scientists, health scientists, policymakers, and solution-minded communities, for the benefit of society. Yet, despite progress, we have not succeeded in tapping or nurturing the full talent pool available, especially within historically-underrepresented minorities and developing nations. This session will highlight the evolving nature of diversity and inclusion within AGU and the global geosciences community and why it matters.
