Advancements in Global Land Cover and Land Use Monitoring I

Session Description:
Land cover and land use (LCLU) data are necessary for conservation and development of natural resources and habitat diversity, as well as to evaluate the capacity of ecosystems to support human needs (e.g. food production). Moreover, accurate LCLU maps are necessary for mapping human and animal health risks when a disease outbreaks. LCLU information are also a baseline to generate thematic maps of human activities and necessary to monitor 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, LCLU change impacts biodiversity, ecosystem services and more broadly regional climate. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a global comprehensive dynamic LCLU monitoring system.

This session brings together experts in LCLU mapping using remote sensing data to present and critically examine latest advancements in this field. Topics include algorithm development for LCLU classification using satellite imagery, machine learning applications for LCLU mapping, validating LCLU maps, and community efforts to improve LCLU class semantics.
