Impacts of Winter Climate Change on Hydrobiogeochemical Dynamics of Terrestrial and Aquatic Systems During the Winter and Shoulder Seasons I

Session Description:
Winters in temperate and boreal regions are characterized by sustained low temperatures and snow accumulation. As winters warm, the loss of these conditions have important implications for ecosystem processes during winter and throughout the rest of the year. However, significant uncertainties prevail in quantifying and predicting the hydrobiogeochemical processes of snow-dominated terrestrial systems occurring during the winter and shoulder seasons as the climate changes. We seek contributions that advance our mechanistic understanding of how changing winter conditions affect terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, both within and outside of winter. We invite presentations from observational, experimental, and modelling studies of hydrological, biogeochemical and ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales and land use types. We are interested in research that advances our understanding of how changing winters impact ecosystem microbial activity, infiltration and hydrologic flowpaths, freeze-thaw effects on carbon and nutrient exchanges, and the coupling-decoupling of microbial and plant interactions.
