Interdisciplinary Investigations on Interactions Between Microbes, Nutrients, and Minerals in Terrestrial Ecosystems: Experimental Studies, Fieldwork, and Modeling Analysis II

Session Description:
Microbial community structure and potential functions in terrestrial ecosystems have been well investigating from soil and ecological perspectives. Simultaneously, environmental geochemical research has been focusing on mineral-organic matter interactions, with broad implications on molecular transformations of carbon. There is an inherent linkage, but limited attention on how microbial-derived organic matter accumulates and interacts with minerals and nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems. Within such a complex system, the importance of competitive or collaborative mechanisms affecting soil organic matter dynamics remains unknown. To address potential questions in the area requires interdisciplinary investigations coupling microbial ecology and geochemistry, crossing experimental studies, field work and modeling analysis. Application of state-of-the-art technologies, such as omics, high-resolution mass spectroscopy, in-situ imaging and many others, would provide valuable insights into the important interfacial reactions. This session will cover interdisciplinary efforts to advance understanding about biogeochemical processes across microbial ecology, nutrient availability, and mineralogy in natural environment.
