River Corridor Biogeochemical and Hydrologic Dynamics Across Scales I

Session Description:
River corridors are characterized by hydrologic exchange that brings surface waters into contact with geochemically and biologically reactive sediments in the subsurface underlying and adjacent to the main channel.  Variability in this exchange is influenced by a variety of factors such as hydromorphic features, subsurface sediment properties, and temporal fluctuations in river stage. Despite advances, major gaps remain in bridging knowledge of controlling processes developed at small spatiotemporal scales with their cumulative effects on river corridor biogeochemical and hydrologic function. This session takes a broad and integrative view of the river corridor, focusing not only on the river channel itself but also incorporating dynamics and processes within the adjacent terrestrial and subsurface environments that collectively represent the terrestrial-to-aquatic continuum. We encourage abstracts that emphasize biotic (e.g., microbes, plants) and/or abiotic (e.g., environmental history, physical setting/dynamics) factors and processes that influence biogeochemical and/or hydrologic function across scales within the river corridor.
