Session Description:
The atomic-scale structure of Earth and planetary materials plays a critical role in determining many physical and chemical properties. These properties are investigated by state-of-the-art experimental and computation approaches, and they in turn provide constraints on the large-scale structure, dynamics, and evolution of Earth and planetary interiors. This session focuses on the frontiers and limits of experimental, computational, and observational investigations of planetary materials and planetary interiors, and how these limits can be addressed by complementary approaches. We welcome contributions that introduce new methods to overcome current practical/theoretical limitations of geophysical methods, high-pressure experiments, and modelling dedicated to determining the physical properties of the deep Earth. We also welcome input from seismologists and geodynamicists who apply knowledge of atomic-scale structures to the study of large-scale structures and processes.
