Session Description:
The session focuses on the processes controlling hydraulic fractures and earthquake ruptures. Our aim is to provide a better understanding of the precursory deformations, the dynamics during the major failure event (as either fluid driven tensile or tectonic driven shear fracturing), and the post-rupture behavior. The rupture is governed by multiple factors including rock properties, in situ stress and fluid pressure conditions, or pre-existing heterogeneities (defects). Concurrent numerical efforts assist lab observations by unraveling the governing physical processes. Our aim is to integrate field, laboratory, and numerical investigations to address the multi-scale precursory deformation mechanisms before major tensile and shear rupture events.
