Advances in the Prediction, Characterization, and Design of Subsurface Infrastructure I

Session Description:
A significant fraction of current global energy production relies on subsurface engineering operations, including energy production, energy storage, and disposal and/or storage of energy-related waste products. Prediction, characterization, and design of such operations is key to containment and control of subsurface fluids/materials.
This session invites presentations that focus on experimental, computational, or field studies related to subsurface infrastructure, including nuclear waste disposal, oil and gas production, geothermal energy production, and subsurface gas storage. Topics may include: monitoring and/or detection of subsurface leakage of fluids or fate and transport of waste materials; chemical and mechanical durability of seals and plugs; chemical, mechanical, or chemo-mechanical evolution of subsurface infrastructure, including nuclear waste repositories and wellbore systems; risk analysis and/or management of leakage scenarios; policy implications and/or environmental impacts; performance assessment or safety analysis of subsurface containment.
