Composition and Material Properties of the Core I

Session Description:
The composition of the core and the properties of core materials at high pressures and temperatures reveal much about the formation, evolution, and current state of the Earth’s core. Discrepancies between density estimates from seismology and mineral physics require the presence of lighter elements in both the liquid outer core and the solid inner core, with potentially different concentrations. There are several candidates, including, but not limited to, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, and sulfur. We seek contributions from geochemistry, experimental petrology, experimental and theoretical mineral physics, seismology, and geodynamics that shed light on the composition and state of the Earth’s core; melting behavior and elastic and transport properties of iron alloys; properties of possible stratified layers in the outer core; crystal structure, elasticity, and seismic attenuation and anisotropy of the inner core; and solidification and deformation of the inner core. Contributions concerning other terrestrial planetary cores are also welcome.
