EP41B:
From Granular Physics to Geomorphology: Scaling Surface Processes Beyond the Continuum Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 61628
Session Description:
Modeling planetary surface processes from channel dynamics to erosion of landscapes is typically performed using a continuum framework. However, efforts to advance our representation of particle scale phenomenology within continuum models are increasingly common. In recent decades, experiments, field observations, and model efforts have supported incorporating the dynamics of discrete particle interactions in the form of what is sometimes referred to as “granular physics” in modeling the evolution of landscapes. Other advances have highlighted complimentary methods for incorporating particle-scale behavior including tracer particle behavior, fractional advection-diffusion models, nonlocal transport, and other approaches that describe the stochastic and probabilistic elements of particle transport, deposition, and erosion at either grain- or macroscopic scales. This session welcomes contributions from physical experiments, field work and modeling work that highlight particle scale dynamics in earth and planetary surface processes as well as the upscaling of these dynamics into continuum-like frameworks capable of representing large-scale systems.
