EP33C:
Time, Space, and Hydrologic Influences on Sediment and Nutrient Dynamics: From Sources to Delivery Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 61670

Session Description:
Quantifying sources, travel times, and delivery of fine sediments and nutrients are critical components of many catchment studies. Sediment tracing, fingerprinting, and analysis of event concentration-discharge relationships are increasingly used to meet this research challenge, as they provide critical spatial and temporal information needed for effective to management of sediment and nutrient loading. However, recent work has also revealed a need to revisit assumptions associated with the fingerprinting and tracer methods such as discriminant properties selection, conservative behavior of properties during transport, and error analysis. Similarly, event-based analysis has unanswered questions related to clearly defining individual events, characterizing temporal patterns, and moving from competing lines of inference to plausible causality.

This session seeks to address fine sediment source fingerprinting, approaches for quantifying sediment travel times, techniques for providing new insights into the analysis of event sediment and nutrient dynamics, and the incorporation of these practices into larger catchment studies
