Natural and Anthropogenic Disturbances in River Corridors: Quantifying Responses and Restoring Riverine Processes I

Session Description:
Rivers experience a broad range of natural and anthropogenic disturbances that influence geomorphic processes and ecosystem function. Particularly pressing anthropogenic disturbances have been dam construction throughout the 18th-20th centuries, breaching of poorly maintained and/or aging dams, and more recently dam removal in the US. While these disturbances can dramatically impact riverine ecosystems, it is increasingly understood that plants and animals alter local processes in ways that frequently enhance their survival and impact river function. Understanding biophysical interactions is critical for managing and restoring riverine ecosystems in response to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, particularly in the face of climate change. This session explores two nested topics: (1) geomorphic and hydrologic responses to dams and dam removal/breaching (especially studies that link physical and ecosystem responses to these disturbances) and, more broadly, (2) process-based studies that quantify the mechanics of complex biophysical interactions in natural, impacted, and/or restored river systems.
