Advances and Challenges to Understanding Sedimentary Processes, Dynamics, and the Creation of Stratigraphic Patterns Through Integrated Studies of Sedimentary Deposits from Grain to Basin I

Session Description:
Sedimentary deposits are archives of the physical and chemical processes operating on Earth’s surface over timescales of hours to millennia. Recent progress in experimental and numerical modeling capabilities, and innovations in detrital analyses and data processing have improved our understanding of sedimentary dynamics across timescales. Integrated theoretical and empirical studies may shed light on the nature of sediment generation, dispersion, and preservation in depositional systems, and on the origins of the organization of sedimentary structures from grain to basin scales.


Here, we solicit presentations that showcase the latest research linking Earth-surface processes to the emergence of stratigraphic architecture in sedimentary deposits. This session will focus on work that uses novel and integrative approaches, e.g. physical sedimentology, detrital geo-thermochronology, geochemistry, and quantitative stratigraphic analysis, to unravel the connections among climatic, tectonic, autogenic, and/or anthropogenic controls and the emergence of sedimentary patterns from source terranes to depositional sinks.
