Graduate Student Experiences, Preparation, and Pathways into the Workforce I

Session Description:
The majority of graduate students in the geosciences follow career paths outside of academia, and need to adapt their transferable skills to a broader workforce, particularly since there has been a decrease in hiring of new graduates at all degree levels since 2013 (AGI, Status of Recent Geosciences Graduates 2017). This session will explore new models of graduate school education. It will examine the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) experience in what is an increasingly technologically advanced landscape, and innovative models for engaging undergraduate students. We will then address preparing for a career in an evolving profession, and host a panel of geoscientists from beyond academia.
