Characterization, Modeling, and Remediation of Fissured, Carbonate, and Karst Groundwater Systems I

Session Description:
Fractures, conduits and surface solution features in carbonate karst hydrosystems lead to strong surface/subsurface interactions that result in significant water, mass, energy, and contaminant transport within the critical zone. These systems are highly heterogeneous, with complex hydrologic, geochemical, and biological processes occurring over a wide-range of spatio-temporal scales. As a result, they show non-linear responses and are extremely difficult to characterize, model, remediate, and manage. Particular challenges include 1- the need for appropriate knowledge and technologies to integrate processes from the surface to the outlet of the saturated zone, 2- assessment of the role of karst systems on energy and mass budgets of the critical zone, 3- karst response to climate variability and change, 4- development of the most appropriate karst water remediation approaches. This session requests abstracts on research addressing such challenges to assess the multi-scale variability, characterization, monitoring, modeling, and remediation of fissured, carbonate, and karst water systems.
