New Tools, Methods, and Case Studies to Support Communities in Adopting Green Infrastructure to Manage Storm Water I

Session Description:
Green Infrastructure (GI), the use of natural approaches and technologies that promote stormwater retention, infiltration, and treatment, in contrast to grey infrastructure (concrete channels and pipes) is emerging in communities as an effective stormwater management practice. Key to adoption and implementation of GI is understanding economic differences among green, grey, and hybrid water infrastructure as well as quantification of benefits that may be derived such as groundwater replenishment, treatment of pollutants, and improvements that attract private investment to revitalize neighborhoods. While GI has been found to be effective, it generally requires an extensive web of collaborations between multiple city departments, local organizations, planners, and developers to make it successful. This session will explore critical economic and sociopolitical factors including lessons learned from GI demonstrations and tools such as life cycle costs assessment and ecosystem services, highlighting critical steps and information needed for local governments to successfully adopt GI practices.
