Toward Better Water Planning and Management in an Uncertain World I

Session Description:
Water management faces a quickly evolving landscape, with climate change and related shifts in drought and flood severity, frequency, and duration; land use change; technological advances; and changes in water use and demand.  Each of these is rife with uncertainty and wide variation over space and time.  Long-term infrastructure and management decisions need to be made in the face of both deep uncertainty and non-stationarity.  How can we consider these changes while ensuring that water resource and flood protection systems are resilient, robust, and suitable for the requirements of the end user? This session will explore tools for characterising and assessing water systems at local through to continental scales for the purposes of informing planning and decision making, while considering climate, environmental, and societal changes that will impact system risks, resilience, and robustness.
