Session Description:
NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission has completed its three-year prime mission and is now entering extended-mission phase. So far, measurements and geophysical products covering three annual cycles are available. The global L-band radiometry from SMAP is used in diverse scientific investigations including water, energy and carbon cycle research, terrestrial ecology, cryosphere and ocean science. The land applications encompass topics related to the role of soil moisture control on the evaporation, vegetation gross primary productivity, floods and droughts monitoring, climate modeling and weather prediction. The ocean and cryosphere applications include detecting ocean high-winds during tropical storms, tracking fresh-water outflow into coastal oceans, mapping sea-ice cover and shallow ice thickness and detecting firn aquifers in land ice masses. This session highlights the science uses of data from SMAP products and validation experiments.
