Extreme Rainfall and Flooding: Monitoring, Forecasting, Risk Assessment, and Socioeconomic Consequences I

Session Description:
Severe storm and flood hazards are on the rise globally with the frequent recorded events occurring during the past few years in the US alone. The aim of this session is to provide a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences among atmospheric-hydrological researchers, modelers and decision makers. The session welcomes contributions on the development of novel models, case studies, remote sensing and monitoring approaches exploring the following topics:

 

-Addressing past and prospective changes in intense rainfall and floods under environmental changes (global warming, land use change, etc.)

-Computing nonstationarity, spatio-temporal variability, and predicting these events over short- to long-term periods, from catchment to regional and continental scales

-Developing models, hypothesis testing and diagnostics to quantify uncertainty/error in intense rainfall and flood prediction

- Constructing case studies of these events in climate sensitive and flood prone regions worldwide

-Assessing the risk and socio-economics consequences of these extremes
