H31D:
Groundwater–Surface Water Interactions: Identifying and Integrating Physical, Biological, and Chemical Patterns and Processes Across Systems and Scales I
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 62543
Session Description:
Groundwater-surface water (GW-SW) interfaces (e.g., hyporheic and benthic zones, riparian corridors, and wetlands) often function as biogeochemical and ecological hotspots that can substantially influence both whole-stream and watershed processes. Interactions between GW and SW occur over a range of spatial and temporal scales, which are frequently complex, nested, and coupled. Understanding the local and cumulative role these interactions play on processes such as nutrient cycling, thermal and flow regulation, microbial metabolism and habitat structure, requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates principles from hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry and aquatic ecology. This 10th-annual GW-SW session aims to bring together the broad community of GW-SW researchers to facilitate a more complete, integrated understanding of GW-SW processes across varying systems and scales. Thematic sub-sessions will be organized around research identifying and integrating multidisciplinary processes through observations, experiments, and models.
