Innovations in Subsurface Contaminant Transport and Remediation I

Session Description:
Our understanding of contaminant behavior in subsurface environments is increasing rapidly. This session presents a forum to share recent advances in our understanding of the physicochemical processes affecting the fate, transport, and remediation of subsurface contaminants. We welcome theoretical, laboratory, field, and modeling research into the coupled, non-linear processes affecting contaminant transport and remediation. These processes span the hydrogeological, geochemical, radiological, and microbiological domains and include contaminants and/or remediants ranging from organics, metals, and radionuclides to pathogens and nanoparticles. Investigations of emerging contaminants are especially welcome. New applications and approaches to quantify and enhance remediation performance or develop closure strategies are appropriate, including contributions addressing the sustainability of assessment and remedial technologies in light of new discoveries. Presentations highlighting the synergy of multiple remedial approaches are especially welcome. Broad participation bridging traditional research areas, including groundwater, vadose zone, groundwater-surface water interface, biology, chemistry, soil physics, and remediation engineering is encouraged.
