Session Description:
Rivers comprise a small fraction of the earth’s surface, yet they have outsized importance as regulators of freshwater chemistry, aquatic food webs, biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem health, and water resources for society. Aquatic scientists have recognized critical controls on mobilization and storage of materials, and the location and timing of biological processing that influence the fate of contaminants and outcomes for aquatic health. Challenges remain in applying that knowledge to improve management strategies to protect functional values of river corridors. Cumulative assessments through large river networks are increasingly a reality, aided by advancements in the wall-to-wall mapping of the geospatial fabric of river basins, greater availability of real-time water quality data, and growing capabilities in continental-scale modeling. This session features presentations that improve the linkage between scientific understanding of river functions in supporting aquatic life and human health with current issues in managing and regulating river systems.
