Solute and Sediment Delivery from Headwaters to the Sea: Impacts of Land Use and Aquatic Connectivity I

Session Description:
Watershed exports of solutes and sediments, which together comprise water quality, arise from the integration of climatic and hydrogeologic conditions.  Human alteration of land cover and connectivity has led to widespread, often vexing degradation of water quality, with important impacts to watershed function and attended ecological services. With the emergence of high frequency water quality sensors, novel isotopic tracers, and attendant improved understanding of water transit times and flowpath reactivity, the frontier for predicting, and thereby remediating, water quality is rich and exciting.  This session invites contributions that 1) explore how changing land cover and connectivity impact watershed dynamics, 2) develop new tools to better resolve spatial and temporal heterogeneity of watershed processes (e.g., solute and sediment generation, retention), and 3) enumerate water quality time lags and restoration potential.
