B44E:
Spaceborne Lidar for Mapping Vegetation Structure I eLightning

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 63067

Session Description:
In late 2018, two space-based laser mapping systems will be launched by NASA: ICESat-2 and GEDI. Each of these lidar missions will provide data useful for mapping vegetation structure, although they collect data at different spatial resolutions, with different wavelengths and measurement strategies. GEDI is primarily focused on mapping forest structure, and its ~22 m full waveform near infrared footprints will be used to produce both footprint-level and gridded estimates of elevation, canopy height, canopy profiles and aboveground biomass. Conversely, although ICESat-2’s ATLAS instrument is designed primarily for solid Earth and ice applications, it will also provide vegetation structure products. ICESat-2 will provide estimates of vegetation canopy height, density, and vegetation profiles. This session will focus on mapping vegetation structure with GEDI and ICESat-2, and welcomes abstracts that address aspects of biomass modeling, sensor simulation, calibration/validation, data scaling, fusion approaches, inter-comparison of data to other sensors, algorithms and applications.
