Water and Society: The Future of Coupled Water–Energy Systems Confronting Global Change I Posters

Session Description:
The impacts of long-term change on water systems often manifest themselves as short-term management challenges. Major trends affect water systems including changing precipitation and snowmelt timing influencing the seasonality of hydro availability; changing frequency of floods and droughts influencing both peak power demands and the operating conditions at dams; and the expanding role of wind and solar technologies. These trends create a range of challenges and opportunities for water system managers. This session focuses on moving beyond traditional uncertainty approaches to develop flexible physical systems that actively adapt and respond to new information. In this session, we solicit novel contributions on (1) climate adaptation; (2) uncertainty and sensitivity analyses for vulnerability assessments; and (3) reducing the impacts of nonstationary extreme events on energy, agricultural, and ecological systems.
