Assessing Environmental Impacts, Characterization, Treatment, Injection, and Uses of Hydraulic Fracturing and Oil and Gas Waste Waters II Posters

Session Description:
Unconventional energy development using hydraulic fracturing to extract oil and gas from low-permeability shales has played a critical role in enhancing national energy security. However, this development has been accompanied by environmental concerns, particularly impacts on water resources. In addition, a recent focus on produced waters has brought to the fore issues of subsurface pressurization, seismicity and contamination related to the high salinities and associated potentially toxic compounds such as naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), and organic compounds from the associated hydrocarbons. Minimizing injected volumes through treatment for industrial or agricultural and other beneficial use could resolve many of the issues. We invite talks on a variety of topics, including resource depletion, risk assessment and studies of groundwater contamination, such as anthropogenic vs. natural stray gas and brine migration, impacts of produced water injection (pressurization/seismicity), alternative water sources such as brackish groundwater produced water, including new produced water treatment technologies.
