Session Description:
In 2013, Canada released a new height reference system that is defined by an equipotential surface and realized by a geoid model. This new vertical datum is compatible with today’s Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which provide efficiently accurate 3D positioning. Geoid-based datum is replacing the levelling-construct vertical datum.  USA and Mexico are also moving in the same direction.  USA is currently collecting a new set of gravity data by airborne technique throughout the continental USA, Alaska, Hawaii and territories in support to geoid modelling.

The session is to bring discussion on theoretical and practical development of regional geoid models, the collection and analysis of data required for the establishment of geoid-based datum, and roadmap towards a World Height System and height system unification. In addition, presentations on the application of geoid models or height systems in engineering, hydrographic and oceanographic projects are welcome.
