Session Description:
Climate scenarios connect fundamental research in atmospheric sciences with impact research and decision-making in the adaptation to climate change. Their design involves post-processing climate model simulations, notably for filling the gap between the relatively coarse resolution of current models and the spatial scale of end-user needs. It also involves synthesizing the vast amount of simulated and observed data in ways which render it accessible to climate non-specialists while considering the diverse sources of uncertainty. In this session, the focus is on both the latest methods in the post-processing of climate simulations (extreme events, multivariate statistical adjustment, variables with low climate change signal, etc.) and the ways to synthesize the information for an efficient communication to decision-makers (simulation selection, probabilistic scenarios, spatial analogs, etc.).

Session Description - en français: Les scénarios climatiques font le pont entre d'un côté la recherche fondamentale en sciences de l'atmosphère et de l'autre les études d'impact et la prise de décision liée à l'adaptation aux changements climatiques. Leur design implique le post-traitement des simulations climatiques, afin notamment de pallier la disparité entre la résolution des modèles et l'échelle spatiale liée aux besoins des usagers. Il implique aussi de synthétiser la grande quantité de données simulées et observées d'une manière à la rendre accessible à des non-experts du climat, tout en considérant les diverses sources d'incertitude. Dans cette session, l'accent est mis à la fois sur les plus récentes méthodes de post-traitement (événements extrêmes, ajustement statistique multivarié, variables à faible signal de changement climatique, etc.) et sur les façons de synthétiser l'information pour communiquer efficacement avec les preneurs de décision (sélection des simulations, scénarios probabilistes, analogues spatiaux, etc.).
