Abstract:
Numerical simulation was conducted to reconstruct tidal changes taken place within and around the Mekong River Delta during the Holocene. The paleobathymetry used in this study was based on GIA model and was modified by removing thick Holocene deposits existent in Mekong and Chao Phraya river deltas. A preliminary result shows that semi-diurnal tidal currents stronger than the modern condition were developed at the inner portion of the paleo Mekong estuary during the mid-Holocene transgressive stage, suggesting larger contribution of tides on the formation of the Mekong River Delta than at present.
