Satellite EARTH workshops increase reach, sustainability, and growth of EARTH (Education And Research: Testing Hypotheses): a truly collaborative workshop model between researchers and educators to get real data into the classroom.

The EARTH (Education and Research: Testing Hypotheses) workshop has been active since 2002 (www.mbari.org/EARTH) and has been delivered at a wide variety of locations around the United States due in large part to the ability to attract co-hosts that have found value in this workshop model and are willing to host and help cover some of the costs. I would like to briefly introduce the workshop model but will spend most of the presentation on Satellite EARTH workshops which are organized and run by EARTH educators. This includes finding participants (educators and researchers) as well as all of the logistics involved in running a Professional Development workshop. MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) is able to provide some limited funding for educator stipends, food, and supplies. These satellite workshops help disseminate the EARTH model and provide a very cost-effective method for sustaining EARTH, getting data into the classrooms, and making connections between researchers and educators.
