Abstract:
A new algorithm for in situ calibration of oxygen sensors deployed on Argo profiling floats allows for multi-year observations of the upper ocean oxygen cycle in ice-covered regions. Here we present newly recalibrated data from existing floats in the Southern Ocean containing continuous observations of the oxygen cycle throughout freeze-up, winter, spring melt, and summer. The data show the annual development and collapse of the mixed layer, as well as evidence of strong blooms of phytoplankton early in the spring melt season.
